Response Process Task Cards (Reading Skills)
Use these task cards with informative or literary texts. Use them to teach, develop or consolidate reading strategies. You can also use this resource to assess students’ reading comprehension. It can also be ideal for literature/reading centers or as exit cards.
The cards cover three phases of the response process:
Exploring the text – Phase 1
Establishing a personal connection with the text – Phase 2
Generalizing beyond the text/Go beyond the text – Phase 3

How to use this resource?
1.Use the EXPLORE task card to let students make predictions, establish the purpose and audience of the text, take notes of important keywords, as well as write questions they might have.
2.Use the SUMMARY task card to assess reading comprehension and have students practice writing summaries or identifying the main ideas in a text.
3.Use the CONNECT task cards to let students select a relevant idea from the text/chapter and react to it, share their impressions and opinions, or ask a question they might have.
4.Use the GO BEYOND THE TEXT task card to let students identify a situation or issue that is relevant to their own personal experience or our society.
5.Use the editable task card template to create your own reading response task card.
This resource is for grades 8-12, however, it might be useful for students below these grades levels. Check out the preview document.
