Viewing Response Journal (Finding meaning in life)

This two-pager response journal and the talk "There is More to Life Than Being Happy" will help students reflect on such ideas as: growth mindset, happiness, purpose, having meaning in life, goals, recognizing one's values, achievement, success and fulfillment. This resource has been designed to be used with the video titled: There is More to Life than Being Happy, speech given by speaker Emily Esfahani Smith (Data provided by TED).

The teaching duration is an estimate. Depending on your students' pace, you may spend more or less time on this activity.

How can you use this resource?

  • You may use this resource to develop learners’ competency of reinvestment of understanding of texts or practice listening skills – listen for global understanding, listen for specific information.

You may also use this resource:

  • as an emergency sub plan,

  • as a listening activity to introduce a new unit,

  • as an extra activity

  • as a plan B when you do not feel like planning for the next day.

What is exactly included?

  • Plan (clearly defined purpose of each response process phase: explore, connect, go beyond; competencies/skills being developed)

  • Two-pager viewing response journal: smaller in size, but rich in content (both PDF and PPT files included).

  • Answer Key included

  • Preview document that also includes information about how to print the two-pager response journal in Power Point and PDF.

The response journal includes the following phases of the response process:

  • Before listening/watching - Discussion and anticipation guide

  • While listening/watching - Learners will answer a couple of comprehension questions (explore phase/listen for specific information)

  • After listening/watching - a) Connect to the text phase: Learners are required to establish connection with the text (guided questions) and b) Go beyond the text phase: Learners are required to reinvest new information from the video in order to answer the writing prompt.

Before showing the video to your students, I advise you to listen to it to determine if it is appropriate for your learners. I would recommend using this speech and two-pager response journal with more advanced (upper-intermediate, advanced) and more mature students such as Grades 11-12 or Adult Education.

TEACHING DURATION: approximately 50 minutes ( Depending on your students' pace, it can take more or less). 

FILE DETAILS: Resources may be in a zip or a PDF file. Please make sure you can open these files. Format: standard US letter size.
