Teach Poe's Gothic short story with this unit that includes vocabulary, reading comprehension, short story analysis and writing activities worksheets. For ELA/ESL/EESL students. In the zip file, you will find differentiated activities, the text of the original short story as well as an answer key document. 

UPDATE October 2018:

  • There is a Literary Terms handout included that can be used while students are completing the second part of the document - Focus on Analysis. This handout is slightly editable as it allows you to add other literary devices
  • Differentiation: active link to the Tell-Tale Heart short film is included in the Teacher's Copy (Read It First AK document)
  • The final reinvestment task (written production) now includes a third option that you can edit - Add your own topic or essay question.
  • Font size of the original text has been reduced to 13.
  • Some minor changes made to the design.

Teacher’s copy: answer key (the answer key provided is a possible solution, however, you and your students may come up with more insightful answers and interpretations)

The unit contains three sections:
A. FOCUS ON READING, ANNOTATING THE SHORT STORY AND CHECKING COMPREHENSION (before, while and after reading activities + short story elements: plot graphic organizer)
B. FOCUS ON ANALYSIS - stylistic devices, gothic elements, reliable/unreliable narrator, theme, imagery, tone, word choice, conflict
C. FOCUS ON REINVESTMENT OF UNDERSTANDING - Writing activities (group project - mock trial; final reinvestment task - written production)

This completely revamped unit is ideal for grades 9-12, however, it may be useful for students above or below these grade levels. Please, check out the preview document to determine if the resource is appropriate for your students. 
If you teach ESL students, the document is for advanced ESL students (Enriched ESL students).
